(OTTAWA) - J.S. Giguere, Marty Turco and Steve Yzerman are this year's
winners of the National Hockey League Fans' Association (NHLFA) player
awards for the 2002-03 season and playoffs.
Each year during the playoffs the NHLFA asks its Members to vote on the top
NHL player in three categories: Most Valuable Player, Best Bang for the Buck
and Best Role Model.
J.S. Giguere, goaltending star with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, took this
year's award for NHLFA Most Valuable Player while leading his team to a
seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals. He established an impressive 1.62
goals against average (GAA) in this year's playoffs.
Marty Turco of the Dallas Stars won Best Bang for the Buck, while Steve
Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings was selected Best Role Model. This is the
third time Yzerman has taken this award since it was established four years
ago.
"I love the sport of hockey and give everything I have to it; that is why I
play the game," Turco said. "I would like to thank all who voted for me for
this award."
Turco finished the season with a top-ranked 1.72 GAA in 55 regular season
games. When other NHL player salaries are considered, Turco was a steal for
the $850,000 he earned this past season.
For the awards, the NHLFA polls its community asking Members to nominate one
player in each of the three categories. To arrive at a final winner, the
nominations are short listed and then voted on by the entire Association.
The NHLFA was launched in 1998 to give hockey fans a way to express their
views on NHL hockey and to influence the game for the better. The
non-profit NHLFA is continuing its drive to secure corporate sponsorship for
the Association. Hockey fans become Members of the NHLFA by registering at
www.nhlfa.com. Membership is free.
