(OTTAWA) - Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks is the winner of the
National Hockey League Fans' Association (NHLFA.com) "Best Bang for the
Buck" award for the 2000-2001 season.
The Best Bang for the Buck is one of three Members' Choice Awards for
NHL players announced today by the NHLFA. It goes to the player NHLFA
members select as the best value for salary paid. Nabokov's salary this
year is $475,000.
The three winners this year are:
- Evgeni Nabokov, San Jose Sharks (Best Bang for the Buck)
- (tie) Ray Bourque, Colorado Avalanche, and
Steve Yzerman, Detroit Red Wings (Best Role Model)
- Joe Sakic, Colorado Avalanche (Most Valuable Player)
For the awards, the Association polls its members and asks them to
nominate one player in each of the three categories. To arrive at a
final winner, the nominations are short listed and then voted on by the
membership.
It's the second straight year Steve Yzerman has been recognized in the
best role model category.
This year the top three vote getters in the Best Bang for the Buck
category were goaltenders. Still, Nabokov was the clear winner garnering
more than three times as many fan votes as his nearest rival in the
category, Patrick Lalime of the Ottawa Senators.
"It is a great honor to have been chosen the NHL's "Best Bang for the
Buck" player by the NHLFA," says Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks. "To be
recognized by the fans of the NHL is a big thrill for me."
The National Hockey League Fans' Association was launched in 1998 to
give hockey fans across North America and worldwide a way to express
their views on NHL hockey and to influence the game for the better.
Current membership in the Internet-based NHLFA stands at nearly 17,000.
This is the second year the NHLFA has presented its Members' Choice
Awards. Last year's winners of the NHLFA Members' Choice Awards were:
- Fred Brathwaite, Calgary Flames, (Best Bang for the Buck)
- Steve Yzerman, Detroit Red Wings (Best Role Model)
- Jaromir Jagr, Pittsburgh Penguins (Most Valuable Player)
