(OTTAWA)The National Hockey League Fans' Association (NHLFA.com) today announced its first-ever Members' Choice Awards for NHL players.
The Association polled its members and asked them to nominate one player in each of three categories who represented: Best Bang for the Buck, Best Role Model and Most Valuable Player.
The winners are:
- Fred Brathwaite, Calgary Flames, (Best Bang for the Buck)
- Steve Yzerman, Detroit Red Wings (Best Role Model)
- Jaromir Jagr, Pittsburgh Penguins (Most Valuable Player)
To arrive at a winner, the nominations submitted by NHLFA members were short listed and then voted on by the membership.
The most hotly-contested category in the Members' Choice Awards proved to be the Best Bang for the Buck Award, but, in the end, Fred Brathwaite, goaltender for the Calgary Flames, was the clear winner.
"I'd like to thank the fans for recognizing me for this award," said Fred Brathwaite of the Calgary Flames. "It's an honour to receive any award at this level, especially one chosen by the fans."
The National Hockey League Fans' Association (NHLFA.com) was created in 1998 to give hockey fans across North America and worldwide a way to express their views on NHL hockey and to influence the game for the better. Current membership in the Internet-based Association stands at nearly 14,000.
NHLFA co-founders Jim Boone and Jim Spendlove will be in Toronto over the All-Star Weekend and available for interviews.
