NHLFA Members Update

One week into our four-week membership drive, the glass is 17% full and 83% empty. Only 34 NHLFA'ers have become paying Members and the March 15 sink-or-swim deadline to reach 200 paying Members is fast approaching. Another very disappointing fact is that only 3 of the 34 paying Members are Canadian and one third of NHLFA'ers are Canadian. We've included all the names of paying Members at the bottom of this note.

We've monitored the discussion on the NHLFA Web site under 'The Boards' and have carefully reviewed every e-mail in response to our membership drive. There is a common theme among the comments. The following are the two primary concerns we have received:
  1. A lower Membership fee of $5 to $10 (all figures USD) would be more reasonable.
  2. There is still unanimous support for the Association and many people are volunteering their skills and time and want the NHLFA to succeed.
With these comments in mind, we have carefully examined ways to survive beyond March 15. On Monday this week, we proposed a plan to paying Members that expands our membership drive. The paying Members have accepted this plan.

THE PLAN

Currently, the Association has 16 distinct challenges it must overcome in the next few months. We are inviting all NHLFA'ers to contribute a little bit of time to one or more of 16 "Teams" tackling these challenges. You can join one of these Teams for $7. You will be involved in the decision-making process on specific issues and you will also help achieve our membership drive goals. NHLFA'ers who sit on at least one Team will become "Team Participants".

There are now three distinct levels of NHLFA participation:

– Paying Members - $33
– Team Participants - $7
– Subscribers - no charge

Each Team will examine specific issues, solicit opinion from NHLFA'ers and recommend a solution. Paying Members would be invited to participate on ALL Teams. Each Team will be led by a "Captain" to ensure specific issues are effectively communicated to the Team participants, voted on and documented. Participation as a Team Captain would require only a few hours of e-mail communications with participants on your Team.

Please review the following list and then consider joining a Team where you feel your skills/opinion would benefit the NHLFA:
  1. Mandate
  2. Recruitment & Retention
  3. Advertising
  4. Internal Fundraising
  5. Corporate Sponsorships
  6. Local NHLFA Chapters
  7. NHL Arena Promotions
  8. NHLFA Conference
  9. NHL Player Awards
  10. NHLFA.com Technical Infrastructure Development
  11. NHLFA.com Web Content
  12. Selection of Advisory Board
  13. Multi Sports Web Portal Development
  14. Fan Report and Mini-poll Development
  15. Promotions
  16. NHL Players' Association Communications
